Salford Diocese Schools Singing Programme
At our school, we are proud to take part in the Diocese of Salford Schools Singing Programme, with our Year 3 and Year 4 pupils enjoying this exciting opportunity each week.
The programme was introduced across the Diocese in 2021 (we joined in 2024) and is part of a national initiative to promote high-quality singing in schools.
What does the programme involve?
Children take part in weekly singing sessions during the school day, led by specialist choral directors from the Diocese. These sessions are fun, active, and designed especially for each class.
Through the programme, pupils:
Learn a wide range of songs, including music for school Masses and liturgies
Develop their confidence and vocal skills
Explore different styles of music through engaging activities
Grow in their understanding of music as part of both learning and worship
Songs of the Earth
On Friday 16 May 2025, Pupils from St Sebastian's were part of a 1400 strong choir of schoolchildren from across the diocese who filled Salford's Lowry Theatre in a debut performance of a new choral work developed by schools through workshops at the Diocese of Salford's Laudato Si' Centre.

Jubilee Year of Hope
In December 2024, pupils from our school, joined 23 other schools from the Salford Schools Singing Programme (SSP) singing 'Pilgrims of Hope' by Francesco Meneghello and Pierangelo Sequeri in anticipation of the 2025 Jubilee Year 'Pilgrims of Hope'.
Supporting faith and worship
A key part of the programme is using music to support our Catholic life. The children learn sacred music linked to the liturgical year, which enhances our collective worship and helps pupils take a more active role in prayer and Mass.
Enriching opportunities
As part of the programme, pupils may also take part in special events and performances across the Diocese, sometimes joining hundreds of other children to sing together in large celebrations of music and faith.
A love of singing for life
The Schools Singing Programme encourages a lifelong love of music, helping our children to grow in confidence, creativity, and faith—using their voices to praise God and bring joy to others.
