What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is funding allocated to schools for the purpose of boosting attainment of pupils from low income families. It is intended to enable schools to provide targeted support to help children reach their full potential.
Funding is allocated for children who are looked after by the Local Authority or have been previously looked after children whose parents are in the armed forces and for every child who is registered for Free School Meals.
Who is eligible for Free School Meals?
Children can have Free School meals if their parents receive any of the following:
- Income Support
- Income based Jobseekers allowance
- Income related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- Child tax credit provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income that does not exceed £16,190
- The guaranteed element of Pension Credit.
Therefore, it is really important to make sure all children who qualify are registered for Free School Meals even if you choose to send a packed lunch for them.

How will school spend Pupil Premium?
School have the freedom to spend the Premium in a way they think will best support the raising of attainment for the most vulnerable pupils. School is required to report how they spend the money allocated. It is important to remember that not all children who are allocated Pupil Premium will receive support at the same time.

How is Pupil Premium used to support pupils at St Sebastian’s RC Primary School?
Pupil Premium has enabled us to continue to provide high levels of additional quality support for our pupils including:
- PIXL interventions for Y6 and Y5
- Maths and English support in small groups for ‘Key marginal’ children
- Subsidised Break Club
- After-School clubs for KS1 and KS2
- Deprivation fund to support families purchasing uniform or pay for school trips
- Additional staffing to support strategies to ‘narrow the gap’
- Whole school provision of PE kits to ensure that PE activities are ‘all inclusive’
- Engagement of specialist professionals (Play therapist, Educational Psychologist, Caritas Social Worker – working with vulnerable children and their families and Education Welfare Officer.
- Employing an artist in residence and a dance yoga teacher to improve mindfulness and arts.
English and Maths Support
Pupils in danger of not making expected progress in English and Maths are identified and interventions are offered to accelerate progress. Support is specific to the needs of the pupils and is delivered by the teacher, HLTA or level 3 TA. Support is also offered to identified pupils to help them make better that expected progress.
The Deputy Headteacher delivers to Y6 and Y5 with the support of experienced TAs the PixL Intervention Programme to ensure that any gaps in learning are addressed. Regular meetings are held to determine progress made and next steps identified. The Deputy Headteacher regularly meets with the Area PixL adviser to ensure that key marginal children are on track.
Outcomes for pupils at the end of KS1 and KS2 have improved so that in 2016 average point scores were broadly in line with national expectations and in 2017, 11% of our PP children achieved the higher standard in reading / writing and mathematics.
All teaching staff and support staff in EYFS and KS1 use Letters and Sounds to deliver the phonic programme. In 2016 our Free School Meal children achieved above national expectations (school 91% national 86%) and in 2017, 30% of our PP children exceeded national reading expectations.
