Phonics and Reading
At St Sebastian's, our pupils learn to read and write effectively through Read Write Inc Phonics. It is a complete literacy programme, for 3 to 7 year olds learning to read and write. Although reading is taught using synthetic phonics, the programme is so much more than that. It covers all of the new National Curriculum requirements for language and literacy.
It teaches pupils to:
- decode letter-sound correspondences quickly and effortlessly, using their phonic knowledge and skills
- read 'tricky' words on sight
- understand what they read
- read aloud with fluency and expression
- write confidently, with a strong focus on vocabulary and grammar
- spell quickly and easily by segmenting the sounds in words
- acquire good handwriting.
Our aim is for pupils to complete the phonics programme as quickly as possible. The sooner they complete it, the sooner they will be able to choose books to read at their own interest and comprehension level.
Our reading scheme draws on books from a wide range of publishers in order to allow our children to experience a broad range of different text types at every level of their development. In the early stages of reading they will focus on reading phonically decodable books to ensure the children can embed their phonics independently.
The Lighthouse and Oxford Guided Reading schemes are used in daily reading sessions across KS1 together with texts from a variety of sources, as in KS2.
