Information for parents
At St Sebastian’s RC Primary School we believe that a caring and stimulating environment is essential to the development of our children. Every child should be happy, secure and confident. We value every child as a unique individual. We provide a supportive and secure environment in which every child can flourish and learn at their own pace to achieve their potential.
The education of your child is something we aim to do in partnership with you and as such parents are always welcome to discuss their child with staff.
Children in our Nursery class follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. This lays a secure foundation for future learning that is planned around the individual needs and interests of the child. They learn by playing, exploring, being active, and through creative thinking which takes place both indoors and outdoors. There is a mixture of child initiated and teacher led learning opportunities.
Children are taught the social skills of sharing and caring, following instructions and are encouraged to develop their speaking and listening skills.

How you can help your child
Please encourage your child in these ways.
To be able to move around safely.
To start to use a pencil or other drawing tools.
To use scissors.
To use a knife and fork.
To go to the toilet independently.
To dress/undress him or herself.
To fasten and unfasten their shoes and coat.
To look after their own belongings.
To mix with other children.
To recognise and name colours, shapes, numbers.
To sort everyday objects into groups.
To count sets of objects.
To help in cooking activities.
To share books in a relaxed atmosphere.
To be given time to talk.
To pronounce words and sounds correctly.
To sing nursery rhymes.
Father Christmas Visit
The Nursery children were very lucky to welcome a special visitor during their Christmas party. Father Christmas came to visit the children and spoke to everyone. The children were very excited, behaved sensibly and waited patiently. They each received a special Christmas present and took them home.
On the last week of the Christmas half term, the children were all very excited. On Wednesday 20th December we all had Christmas dinner. The hall was decorated and Christmas music was playing. We wore our hats that we made especially for this occasion, and there was also Christmas crackers. We loved pulling these with our friends! We then all tucked into our delicious dinner!
In Nursery, we are starting the children off into their school life. One of the most important things to work on at this age is their fine motor skills. The reason why we work on fine motor skills at this age is because this is what helps them to hold a pencil, therefore getting ready to write. We prepare and carry out lots of activities to help children with this in the classroom. The most loved activity by all the children is making and playing with play dough. The children use skills such as squeezing, rolling, mixing, patting and pushing. All these skills are used by hands or fingers. You can make this fun by using music.
